Nearly 250,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. That could be your mother, sister, daughter, your wife, or even you. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events are held so that anyone touched by breast cancer won't have to face their diagnosis alone. It is done to raise awareness and money to fund research, support services, and early detection. Making Strides events are held to save lives.

Survivors are the embodiment of everything Making Strides events are about – saving lives from breast cancer. They inspire participants, reminding them of why they're walking. For those currently under treatment, survivors are a beacon of hope. And there can be no survivors without caregivers – those selfless people who put others' needs before their own. It's survivors and caregivers who make the Making Strides experience as special as it is.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events celebrate survivors and raise awareness and money to help the American Cancer Society save lives. The money is used to fund innovative research, provide free information and support, and to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it's most treatable.

The American Cancer Society has played a critical role in many breast cancer research breakthroughs in recent history. And the next breakthrough could be right around the corner because money raised through Making Strides events currently helps fund countless research and training grants in areas including genetics, drug development, and epidemiological studies. Previously the American Cancer Society has funded potentially lifesaving breast cancer drugs such as Tamoxifen and Herceptin. Money raised this year could go to develop the next generation of lifesaving treatments.

The American Cancer Society offers support programs that assist people throughout their breast cancer journey. For instance, Road to Recovery provides rides for patients who aren't able to get to treatment. Hope Lodge® provides a comfortable place to stay for those who have to travel far from home for treatment. And Reach To Recovery® provides patients with one-on-one emotional support and guidance from someone who has faced breast cancer themselves.

Prevention and education guidelines have been developed by The American Cancer Society and have quickly become the industry standard. Regular testing, exercise, and eating healthy can also help reduce your risk of breast cancer.
